Baksheesh 03:36
I said no to everyone Gave them my excuses Gave them my "I’m so sorry"s One more border to cross One more mask to put on Pay you your baksheesh and I’ll be gone Staring rows of taillights down Wiper blur The past is propane Relax when you roll it and you’ll come out alive In the silence of shadows sometimes Reflect on my repentance And the flows and fouls and falls and failures Staring rows of taillights down Wiper blur The past is propane Relax when you roll it and you’ll come out alive I gave you I gave you I gave you Don’t care what you want now I’ll call you back I’m on deadline I gave them my “I’m so sorry”s Gave them my excuses And I said no to everyone

What’s next? Do we do the damn dream And pretend it doesn’t matter what we’ve seen What’s next? we could hit the road Wonder which one of us will make the bubble explode And we make our promises and we make our vows But God knows we could just fuck it all up right now So it’s over now The trip's ending here I’ve done my part Here’s the keys, my dear Here we go; stay right where you are You wrote your own myth; you’re gonna be a rock and roll star There you go; you’ll ruin us all No doubt you’ll be the one to make the pillars fall You say you wanna be a pioneer But we all know I can’t drive and you can’t steer So it’s over now The trip's ending here I’ve done my part Here’s the keys, my dear

Rain Dream 02:44
You think you’re someone You moved out here when you were seventeen You think you’re special You’re just an echo on the tape machine I got here early I had my shoes on long before you showed I put my time in I’m gonna borrow every cent I’m owed And the rain dream Means nothing.

Sunday! Sunday! Sunday! Two houses, both alike in dignity At the U.S. 30 dragstrip, where we lay our scene From ancient grudge break to new mutiny Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean In nitro-burning funny cars Two star-crossed lovers take their lives. Death-defying leaps o’er thirty-two tractor trailers Is now the two hours’ traffic of our stage. World of Wheels! World of Wheels!

about

Following his 2022 power-pop single “My Cartoon Mind” b/w “Carrion Bird,” Chicago singer-songwriter Joe Griffin slows the tempo and leans closer to the hazy lyrical play of his previous work on the dark acoustic “Verona Sunday” EP. Here Griffin’s voice edges up through a blur of reverb, exhaust, rain-spattered windshields and suspiciously unreliable narration. Where “Cartoon Mind” and “Carrion Bird” looked inward at personal flaws, “Verona Sunday” snarls outwards. Or does it?
