Watch out where you walk in here This is where it all went down You can still see the blood from yesterday When we put the devil mask on And break out our giant costumes Twist around the words the masters used to say I borrowed this; you’ll never know We all steal from someone But if you’d understand, even if you know where to start: Cold hands, warm heart I know it’s a source of pride for you To trace the background of it all And tell me all the different poets I ripped off today And then when you’re done you’ve got a hundred different ways of saying I have nothing left to say I don’t remember all the things I ever read; do you? Don’t tell me the things you see don’t affect the things you do.

You Again 02:48
I flay my wrists in front of you My suicide note on the radio You close your eyes and sing along rock back and forth like a baby Oh no, not you again Oh no, not you again You seem to think that you know me Read about my divorce on the radio Turn the page and read along Get ready to cry at the ending Transmissions from men who travelled to Mars invade my sleep I’ll take my chances with the multiheaded monsters Nevermind the pop star

about

Countdown to Apostasy

...was one of the working titles for the "Rough Cut Love" record. I decided not to use it, to the disappointment of some and the relief of others.

One day around July, as I'd been putting in some pretty heavy time on overdubs and mixing, I hit a saturation point, where I could not process how to continue and finish the album.
I needed a brain-break, something to help me clear the muck out.

I spent a long weekend recording quick and dirty alternate versions of the songs, re-imagining them and trying things I probably wouldn't otherwise if locked into some imagined set of "rules" for a "good album" or some perceived preciousness of the material. It was great fun. I got to know some of the songs in ways I hadn't experienced them before, and the exercise gave me much-needed perspective on the album.

None of these re-imagined recordings were deemed appropriate to replace the album versions, but I don't think it's because they're not good; they just weren't right for the album.

So, just for the hell of it, here are some of the alternate versions of songs from "Rough Cut Love." I've also included the 1990 version of "On Your Own," recorded when I was in The Others. Perhaps you'll like some of these interpretations better than the "definitive" versions that make up the album. Perhaps you won't. Either way, it's a bit of me having fun, not taking things so seriously. Thanks for listening.
